Local student-run theater organization One Song Productions will present Decision Height, by Meredith Dayna Levy, an all-female production, December 8 to 10.
Melanie McCoy and Camille Witt, co-directors and East Chapel Hill High School seniors, were looking for a mostly female play when they found Decision Height and “fell in love,” according to Witt.
Decision Height tells the story of six women training in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program during World War II.
“I hope [the audience] will leave informed about the WASP program in which the girls are training,” Witt said. “The story of heroism deserves to be told, and my co-director and I are incredibly honored to be the ones to bring it to our community through Decision Height.”
Senior Claire Mink, actress and member of One Song Productions, found that Decision Height particularly resonated with her.
“This production is truly unlike any other. It’s a mix of [humor], feminism and tragedy, and it’s absolutely fantastic,” Mink said. “I think audiences can expect an emotional roller coaster, in a good way.”
Freshman actress Matilda Chen was interested in Decision Height for several reasons, but mainly because the drama is an all-female production in a field where plays are dominated by male characters.
“I was interested in acting with a completely female cast because the theater opportunities at school and around the community tend to be very male-oriented and male-heavy,” Chen said. “It was appealing to me because it would give me a chance to work with strong, talented, wonderful women that I wouldn’t necessarily have gotten to otherwise.”
Freshman actress Olive Ingledue said she felt a difference in the all-female production versus typical co-ed productions.
“I speak from personal experience when I say that it feels like I have formed stronger bonds with the girls I work with than previous co-ed casts I have been in,” Ingledue said. “All-female productions are different from co-ed productions.”
The play will be performed at the Carrboro ArtsCenter with support from the Orange County Arts Commission.
