Men’s Basketball
Meghan Morton and Alan Hunt
Chapel Hill High School’s men’s varsity basketball team won against Hillside High School on December 12 during double overtime by a margin of eight points. The Tigers also defeated Cedar Ridge High School on December 15. Senior and captain Elijah Haynes carried both games, scoring 20 and 23 points in each, respectively, adding to his 1,000 total points scored over his career as a tiger. Senior captain Max Conolly is the second highest scorer on the team, averaging 12.5 points per game. The team currently holds a record of 5-3.
Women’s Basketball
Max Ring and Peyton McGurk
In its first year under head coach John French, the Chapel Hill High School women’s basketball team has gotten off to a 3-6 start, going 0-1 in conference play. The Tigers are led by senior captains Shannon Wulff and Imani Edwards. Freshman Ceci Calhoun leads the team in scoring with an average of 7.4 points per game, and senior Aniya Taylor averages 3.2 steals per game. Junior Holly Heizer and sophomore Avery Look are tied for the most rebounds on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game. Two of the team’s wins were against Carrboro High School while its most recent victory was over Cedar Ridge High School.
Men’s Indoor Track
Greta Timmins and Caroline Straubel
The men’s indoor track team, led by head coach Joan Nesbit Mabe, won its second meet of the season at Eastern Alamance by over 30 points. The team has had several runners qualify for states just two meets, including seniors Tyler Yandrofski and Silas Buckner, junior Jason Dadolf, and freshman Ethan Mathis in the 4×800, freshman Ben Hawley for the 2 mile and seniors Dylan Blankenship and Shakeem Nickens for high jump.
Women’s Indoor Track
Evangeline Bolles-Rioux and Emma Mann
The Chapel Hill Women’s Indoor Track team dominated at its second meet of the season at Eastern Alamance with the women’s team scoring 112 points, over 40 points more than any other team. At Eastern Alamance, there were eight state qualifiers: the 4×800 relay team, the 4×400 relay team, Madi Marvin and Anna Stouffer in 1000m and Megan Marvin with a state-leading time of 1:19 in the 500m. The team has five more meets scheduled this season and is working towards qualifying for the state championship meet in February.
Men’s Swimming
Maggie Springer and Danny Alexander
The men’s swimming team has had a strong start to its season with a successful record of 4-0. The men’s team carried out a firm win against Cedar Ridge and Northern High School on December 12, with a strong performance from the 200-yard medley relay team consisting of senior Jordan Ren, junior Alexander Knight and freshmen Peter Bretzmann and Austin Chang. Other notable individual performances include: senior Thomas Bretzmann’s win in the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Benjamin Huan’s win in the 200 yard IM and junior Spencer Ferris’s second place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.58.
Women’s Swimming
Daphne Charlot and Noah Cohen-Vogel
The women’s swim team won its first meet December 12 after a tie against Carrboro High School and a loss against Cardinal Gibbons. The team beat Cedar Ridge 134-35 and Northern High School 123-37. The team won the 400-meter freestyle relay by over 51 seconds against Cedar Ridge, and sophomore Mia Rose won the 500-meter solo freestyle against Cedar Ridge by 3 minutes, 13 seconds. The women’s team is led by captains Katherine Acierno and Emily Trusky.
Wrestling
Max Kurzman and Maritza Muñiz
The wrestling team is off to a 10-4 start to their season. The team is led by captains and four-year varsity members Sam Gunning (18-4) and Bradley Kenyon (17-4). The Tigers started conference matches with two straight wins and are preparing for their big holiday tournament, The Tiger, this coming weekend. The team is led by head coach Tripp Price.
