Chapel Hill High School is full of creative, ambitious, and driven students. With so many overachievers in one school, it can be hard to keep track of all that’s going on.
For those who want to keep up to date on all the important events happening at Chapel Hill High School, the Daily Roar is a great way to stay updated.
The Daily Roar mainly features stories that discuss students’ accomplishments, upcoming events and opportunities for Chapel Hill High School students.
The Daily Roar started in 2019, soon after Charles Blanchard became the principal of Chapel Hill High School.
“One of my goals, when I became principal in 2018, was to improve communication with our school community, ” Blanchard said. “The weekly message was a good start, but I also wanted to add daily communication that not only provided important information, but also highlighted the good work being done by our students and faculty.”
Creating the school’s newsletter became the responsibility of Chapel Hill High School’s bookkeeper and treasurer, Scott Walker, who worked at the school since November 2009.
“I have a lot of good memories [from working at Chapel Hill High School.] I tend to like the days that are a little bit more extraordinary. I like the various Tiger Fests we’ve done for example,” Walker said.
Walker gathers the information used for the Daily Roar through students and his fellow staff members.
“They just send it to me, and I more or less put it in as they word it. I ask people to [write it], so I can just copy and paste it verbatim and won’t have to worry about writing the individual items,” Walker said.
The majority of the feedback Walker receives on the Daily Roar comes from Chapel Hill High School faculty, but they’re not the only ones who find the newsletter helpful.
Chapel Hill High School’s senior representative Natalie Fleener uses the Daily Roar to stay informed on what is going on around the school.
“I believe that many members of student government read the Daily Roar because it’s helpful to stay up to date on the many opportunities at our school,” Fleener said.
The Daily Roar includes more than just information about what is occurring around Chapel Hill High School. The newsletter also contains words of encouragement and memes to help boost the moods of the students and faculty.
“[The memes] are just from being online and I see things that I think are funny and I kind of just think of a scenario where I can use it,” Walker said. “Sometimes I go to GIF-producing websites and meme generators and try to make something if I have to fit something to an idea I have.”
Walker’s writing for the Daily Roar, along with his memes, has continually helped students and staff alike stay connected in a positive and uplifting way.
“Mr. Walker has done an excellent job with putting together this daily newsletter. His writing provides a sense of humor and a hook that gets people’s attention,” Blanchard said.
