In 1993, the first Flying Biscuit Cafe opened in Atlanta. Within four hours, their biscuits were sold out.
Following rave reviews and various “Best Atlanta Restaurants” titles, the Flying Biscuit has been able to open 25 locations across Georgia, Florida, Texas and North Carolina. Despite the growth of the franchise, it continues to “emphasize neighborhood spirit with Southern-inspired comfort food made with fresh ingredients.”
The restaurant’s bright decor immediately catches the attention of patrons to University Mall’s newest eatery, which opened in February. The Carolina-blue walls feature graphics of biscuits with angel wings, while the largest wall details a hand-painted mural that doesn’t shy away from color. The funky patterns portray various Chapel Hill monuments along with the phrase “Biscuits on the Brain.” Tables are also decked out in vibrant floral prints. The lively atmosphere provides a cheerful vibe that can’t be beat.
The 55-item menu boasts sweet griddle meals; classic egg breakfasts including omelettes, scrambles and benedicts; filling sandwiches; an impressive variety of vegan and vegetarian options; and classic Southern sides. In short, there is something for everyone at the Flying Biscuit.
In an attempt to gauge all aspects of the menu, I ordered the Drops of Jupiter, the classic buttermilk pancakes; the Piedmont Omelette; and, of course, a side of biscuits, grits and “moon dusted” potatoes.
While I personally prefer a savory breakfast, the fluffy pancakes may have swayed my judgment. Served with an assortment of butter, maple syrup, and strawberry jam, the Drops of Jupiter was a perfect spin on a classic dish without overwhelming the palate.
I was especially eager to sample the biscuits and grits, as they are the most renowned items on the menu. I was expecting an average biscuit with jam and simple grits. However, I was met with a lightly sugar-coated biscuit topped with a unique cinnamon-apple jelly, along with a distinctively creamy bowl of grits.
By far, my favorite special was the Piedmont Omelette. Stuffed with chicken sage sausage, applewood-smoked bacon, sautéed onions and melted cheddar cheese, the filling dish was perfect in every way.
The menu additionally features the Meggxican Wrap, a spicy mixture of eggs, vegetables and meat laid on a tomato tortilla; the Acai Super Bowl, a mixed berry smoothie bowl topped with nuts and coconut shavings; and the Heavenly French Toast drizzled in raspberry sauce and honey.
Overall, the new branch of the franchise is definitely worth a morning out with friends or family. I will definitely be returning to try the endless list of mouth-watering menu items.
