The Town of Chapel Hill has finished the remodeling of the turf at Cedar Falls Park, making the playing fields more environmentally friendly and similar to that of other parks, such as Homestead Park.
The turf had previously been made of rubber; the new turf is made of cork, a highly sustainable material.
The park, located at 501 Weaver Dairy Road, is across from East Chapel Hill High School and attracts students in the area because of its convenience and location.
Students have expressed their excitement about the turf being changed, making it more accommodating for athletic practices and competitions.
Junior Jesse Lowinger, who plays soccer for Triangle United and Chapel Hill High School, said he’s looking foward to competitions on the new turf.
“I am super excited to get new turf since the [previous] surface was made out of rubber,” he said. “Realistically, [rubber] can hurt players if they fall and is often difficult to play on as it is so unpredictable. Hopefully, the new turf is better.”
Spanish teacher and soccer coach Davis Boyle also believes students will enjoy playing on the remodeled fields.
“It’s nice and fluffy and soft,” Boyle said. “The new in-field materials are really nice: it’s not as thick as the rubber was; it’s not always in your shoes when you leave, but it’s bouncy enough that the ball bounces on it.”
