Students, would you like a job where you can make double the minimum wage? Do you want a job where you can work your own hours? Do you want to drive around town and deliver food?
If so, you may be interested in Doordashing.
For a Doordasher in Chapel Hill, the average salary is $16.10 an hour, compared to the $7.25 minimum wage, according to Indeed.com.
Doordash is a worldwide food-delivery company for which employees deliver food from local restaurants to residences or local businesses. Doordashers can pick their hours and when they work from an app on their phones.
Senior Mae McLaren said she got into Doordashing because it pays well.
“I wasn’t getting paid as much at my last job, so I was looking for something to do in the meantime, and it just worked out,” McLaren said.
McLaren said that while being a Doordash driver is fun, it can also be stressful going through customer service during busy hours.
“When it’s rush hour and things are just really backed up, it can sometimes be a little stressful, but it’s manageable,” she said.
McLaren said she plans to work for Doordash as a side job “at least” until the end of the summer.
Unlike other food-delivery companies such as Grubhub and UberEats, which require drivers to be at least 19 years old, Doordash hires drivers who are 18, making most seniors eligible for employment
Senior Carly Sciborski chose to become a “dasher” because she can pick the hours when she works.
“For me, it was the hours because I’m really busy and it’s one of the only places you can get a job and choose your own hours literally up to the minute of when you want to start,” Sciborski said.
Sciborski said that while the job is good, going through customer service can be annoying, especially if people do not tip.
“[If people don’t tip], you can like see it on the app and you kind of get petty,” she said.
While some may feel discouraged to join Doordash because employees must buy their own gas, Sciborski thinks that is not a large factor.
“You make more [money] in wages than you spend on gas,” Sciborski said.
Overall, students look to be enjoying Doordashing in the Chapel Hill area.
