Junior Addie Gilner and freshman Scarlett Gilner, Addie’s younger sister, both reached career point milestones while playing for the Chapel Hill women’s lacrosse team this season.
“I made a post for the women’s lacrosse Instagram about Addie reaching 200 career points, but didn’t think I would be making another post just a month later for 300 points,” senior Claire Willoughby said.
Addie reached 200 career points during the game against Ravenscroft high school on March 23, before reaching 300 points during the last regular season game against Carrboro on April 26.
Addie is ranked eighth in the country for career points.
“The team has been nothing but supportive of Scarlett and me. I am so thankful for the family that Chapel Hill lacrosse has given me,” Addie said.
Scarlett reached 100 career points during the game against Seaforth High School on April 6; she is currently ranked sixth in the country and second in the state for goals.
“I’ve had such an exciting first season playing lacrosse for the school. I’m so excited for the long run we intend to make in the playoffs,” she said.
The sisters led the team to finish 20-0 in the regular season and a 22-1 overall record.
Junior Emery Campbell said the Gilner sisters add a competitive but enjoyable dynamic to the team.
“Playing with Addie and Scarlett is so much fun. The two of them are so competitive and have such a passion for the sport that it makes it so exciting every time we step on the field,” she said.
Coach Emily Heghmann said that, despite their individual talents, the sisters are team-first players.
“Their passion for lacrosse is evident both in their performance and spirit. It is also apparent that Addie and Scarlett are team players and feel that their individual success is equally the success of the whole team,” Heghmann said.
Sophomore Ashton Beale, who also reached 100 career points this season, said that the Gilners are incredibly hardworking.
“Both the sisters have been my best friends for years now. Scarlett and Addie work so hard on and off the field which is shown through their accomplishments this season,” Beale said.
Sophomore Carly Brice said the Gilner sisters add a competitive but enjoyable dynamic to the team.
“The Gilners bring so much passion and love for the sport to every practice and every game which drives the team to compete at such a high and competitive level.”
The sisters led the team to a deep run in playoffs before the Tigers were eliminated by Topsail High School 12-10 in the fourth round of the state playoffs of May 12.
