A new mural inspired by a Chapel Hill High alumna’s childhood memories before moving to Chapel Hill can now be seen in the A-building.
The mural, painted by art teacher Paul Estrada’s 6th period class, was designed by Eh Moo So Shwe, who graduated last year. The project is set to be finished by the end of the school year.
Eh Moo So Shwe’s goal was to depict a lifestyle and environment outside the United States that may be unfamiliar to students.
“The mural is inspired by a student of Thai descent that wanted to represent to the school how her childhood was and where she grew up,” art teacher Paul Estrada said.
Eh Moo So Shwe originally painted the mural idea on paper herself and then helped Mr. Estrada and his art class add more details to the background of the piece and set it up on the wall.
“The mural’s great,” sophomore Layla Daily said. “It’s a simple, calming painting that lightens up the school. I love it when there’s a new mural on campus.”
The mural depicts the village in which Eh Moo So Shwe grew up, located in the countryside of Thailand, surrounded by mountains and farmland.
“I really like the mural,” entrepreneurship teacher Algie Brodnax said. “It brightens up the school and sort of cheers me up a bit instead of just seeing the plain white walls.”
Sophomore Darius Gattis voiced the importance of the new mural and what it means to him.
“I think we really needed this mural,” he said. “It’s great to look at and imagine a childhood different from ours, and being able to see heritages and culture that are different to ours is always important to me.”
