Chapel Hill High School’s Asian Student Association (ASA) and East Chapel Hill High School’s Asian-Pacific-American Club (APAC) teamed up once again to put together the annual Asian Night event on April 13 at East Chapel Hill High School.

Asian Night is a charity event and cultural talent show in which ASA and APAC aim to celebrate the diverse Asian cultures in the triangle area.

“With authentic food from local restaurants and a display of the talents of students and local groups relating to their own backgrounds, we are able to spread cultural awareness,” ASA President Katherine Li said.

Like previous Asian Nights, the event started off with a traditional family potluck style banquet featuring food donated by local Asian restaurants in the Chapel Hill area.

After an hour of socializing and dining, the attendees began to migrate to the auditorium for the upcoming performances.

Performances from the night included various student and local Asian groups organizing music and dance acts. The event closer was once again a nail-biting Chinese yo-yo performance by Chapel Hill alumnus Jesse Chen, a current sophomore at Appalachian State.

The performance section of the night was capped off with a fashion show, featuring traditional male and female garments from all the East Asian countries.

“We host the fashion show annually to display typical outfits from many countries across Asia,” Li said. “All of the outfits are generously donated by students and families who are eager to share their traditional culture.”

All $2,400 of proceeds from the event went towards the One Sky Foundation, an organization based in the United States and China that supports orphaned children across China and gives them access to educational resources and nurturing care.

“It was difficult organizing the event since we had limited time and financial resources, but it was ultimately extremely fulfilling for all of our leadership,” Li said. “All the performances this year were amazing, and we had the best turnout ever, raising a lot of money for One Sky!”
