Seniors Katherine Dokholyan, Madi Marvin and Anna Stouffer, along with sophomore Megan Marvin, set a North Carolina record at the Apex Relays April 21 in the 4×800 meter relay event.
Running a 9:14.07, the girls not only jumped to the top of the state leaderboard, but they also recorded the fourth-fastest time in the entire United States as of April 21.
This victory comes a little under a year after they placed first in the 4×800 meter at the 2017 state championship. Having run the event together since Megan was a freshman, the girls have raced in several state and national indoor and outdoor championships.
Dokholyan, who holds the school records in the 1,600 meter, the 3,200 meter and the 5,000 meter, began running in seventh grade. She was named a Big 8 conference Runner of the Year May 3. Dokholyan’s pre-race preparation includes pasta parties, strides and hydration.
“It always feels rewarding and emotional to do these things with a team right beside me,” Dokholyan said of the record-setting win.
Megan Marvin, the only underclass student on the team, holds the school 500-meter record and is part of the team that holds the distance medley relay record.
“It felt incredible to break the state record with my teammates,” she said. “We have been working very hard, and it finally paid off. I am glad that we had this opportunity to run a fast time before they go to college.”
Individually, Megan is aiming for an All-State placing and potential win in the 800 meter at states.
“I would like to place well at states and hopefully PR in my last high school outdoor season,” Dokholyan said. “I also would like to try for an All-American place at nationals this summer with the 4×800 girls.”
