Chapel Hill High School’s men’s and women’s indoor track team competed at the 4A NCHSAA State Championship on February 12 at Winston-Salem with several all-state performers.
The women’s 4 x 800 team finished third overall (9:44.49), and the men’s team placed 15th (8:38.78), led by senior Dylan Look’s first-place individual performance in the 1,000 meter race (2:31.30).
“The result was the culmination of our dedication and hard work and hopefully can set the standard for the [next] indoor track season,” Look said.
For roughly a month, Look had run the fasted 1,000 meter time after he clocked in at 2:18.14 at the Virginia Showcase event, held on January 15 at Virginia Beach. Look recently committed to run for UNC-Chapel Hill on the track and cross-country teams.
The men’s 4 x 400-meter relay team—comprised of Look, junior Nigel Laurence, sophomore Declan Harden and junior Cam Disser—also set a new school record at states, finishing with a time of 3:33.01 to earn fourth place in the event.
Seniors Amelia Maughan and Abby Weber helped lead the way for the Lady Tigers, each earning fourth-place individual finishes and all-state honors. Maughan ran the 1,000-meter race with a time of 2:57.38, while Weber completed the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:21.43.
Maughan and Weber also paced the team to a third-place finish in the 4 x 800-meter relay along with junior Nora Daley and senior Mara Pirone.
“Heading into the state championship, we wanted to prove that we were a competitive team and that we belong in 4A,” Weber said of her last indoor track race. “I couldn’t be more proud of our overall performance, and I hope to see the running department continue to succeed.”
Although Maughan has yet to commit to running at the collegiate level, she definitely sees herself running in the future.
“Running has taught me a lot both mentally and physically,” the senior said. “I will definitely look to continue running after this year, whether that’s in college or just for a separate team.”
The Tigers hope to build upon their indoor track success.
“Thanks to the winter season, we are now well conditioned and ready to go for another season ahead of us,” Pirone said. “Hopefully we can keep up the good form that we have had all year and end on a high note.”
