Chapel Hill High School senior Maddie Springer won first overall in two of her Double Dutch Speed events at the Grand World Jump Rope Championships held this past summer in Orlando, Florida.
Springer has been competitively jumping for 10 years and is a proud member of the Bouncing Bulldogs.
“I love jumping with my teammates,” said Springer. “We push each other to work harder and go faster and try new skills. Being on a team is a great way to learn how to work with everyone’s strengths and weaknesses.”
Because jump rope is a relatively unknown sport, there a small but tight-knit community of jumpers all around the world.
“I’ve been to Portugal, Spain, France and Peru, and worked with jumpers from multiple other countries, including India, Germany, Russia, Canada and Tanzania,” Springer said.
One of Springer’s favorite aspects of the sport is competing on a team. “We push each other to work harder and go faster and try new skills. Being on a team is a great way to learn how to work with everyone’s strengths and weaknesses,” Springer said.
“The tournaments are always so fun and I love being able to meet so many amazing people,” fellow Chapel Hill jumper Karis Dean said. “I always feel so fortunate to be a part of a community that celebrates so many different cultures.”
