Chapel Hill High School has hired Matthew Dixon, the former athletic director and physical education teacher at Culbreth Middle School, as its new athletic director.
Dixon replaces Lewis Newman, who recently took a job with Orange County Schools as a district-level athletic director.
In addition to his work at Culbreth, Dixon brings extensive experience both within and outside the district.
Before his time at Culbreth, Dixon worked in Chapel Hill High School’s Exceptional Children (EC) department and served as the assistant coach for the women’s basketball team.
“Dixon is an exceptional AD who has already made a significant impact at his previous schools,” Maia Caldwell, current assistant women’s basketball coach, said. “His leadership has led to so many positive changes in those programs, and we have no doubt he will continue to make great strides here as well.”
Outside of the district, Dixon was actively involved with schools in Currituck County, where he served as an athletic director, health and physical education teacher and the women’s basketball coach.
“I’m excited to be part of the Tiger family and look forward to working with everyone to support teachers, coaches, student-athletes, support staff, and administration,” Dixon said in a message sent to the Chapel Hill High School staff.
Other athletic coaches at Chapel Hill High School, including Caldwell, have also expressed enthusiasm about Dixon’s hiring.
“I have seen the hard work Coach Matt Dixon puts in from working with him previously, and I think he’ll be a great leader for Tiger Athletics,” football head coach Ryan Horton said.
“I’m excited to see how he will build upon the school’s athletic programs and lead our student-athletes to even greater success!” added Caldwell.
Dixon will officially began his role as athletic director on February 17.
“I can’t wait to get started!” Dixon said.
