Students show off cars to raise money for the school’s racing team

Chapel Hill High School’s Automotive Racing Club hosted a “Cars and Coffee” meet January 14 to raise money for the racing team and allow participants to show off their customized automobiles.

The event took place on campus, and the Automotive Racing Club raised nearly $700 from the event, which featured an assortment of different cars, ranging from rainbow-colored Volkswagen Beetles to classic BMWs.

“I liked seeing the [modifications] that everyone did on their cars and also the variety of cars,” sophomore Nathan Kenyon said.

One of the main attractions of the meet was Chapel Hill High’s own race car, built by automotive students. Plans are currently underway for another car meet to take place, also showcasing the same car.

“We wish to have a GoFundMe page and [another] car meet soon,” automotive teacher Robert Ballard said.

A number of students from East Chapel Hill High School participated as well, briefly putting aside the school rivalry to benefit the Racing Club.

“It’s nice that we can all benefit Chapel Hill’s race team, despite the usual animosity,” Silas Pendergast, a junior at East, said.

Several students have expressed excitement about the next meet, though the date has yet to be announced.

“It was a fun time, and I’m glad that this was able to happen. I’m definitely planning to go to the next one,” junior Oliver McClure said.
